Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park (FPVSP) is excited to announce the opening of an ambitious project to expand the adaptive trail network in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park. This expansion is part of FPVSP’s broader initiative to increase access for all visitors, especially those with disabilities.

The construction of the new adaptive trail system is complete, just in time for an exciting new season of adaptive mountain biking. This project reflects FPVSP’s ongoing commitment to enhancing outdoor experiences for everyone, ensuring that visitors of all abilities can enjoy the beauty and adventure that Patapsco Valley State Park has to offer.

“Access is at the heart of our mission,” said Dave Ferraro, Executive Director of Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park. “The McKeldin Adaptive Trail expansion is a significant step towards making our trails more inclusive, allowing adaptive mountain bikers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts to fully experience the park.”

About the McKeldin Adaptive Trail Expansion

The new adaptive trail expansion features several upgrades designed to accommodate adaptive mountain bikes and handcycles. These improvements are being made with input from the adaptive sports community, and being built to leading industry standards to ensure they meet the needs of users with diverse physical abilities.

Key features of the project include:

The McKeldin Area is known for its scenic beauty, with rolling hills, lush forests, and stunning river views. The adaptive trail expansion will make these shared natural resources more accessible, allowing individuals with disabilities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors alongside their families and friends.

The Adaptive Trails in McKeldin are high above the river and have sweeping views of the river valley.

Community Collaboration and Support

The McKeldin Adaptive Trail System is made possible thanks to the strong support of Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park, in partnership with the Maryland Park Service, dedicated local volunteers, and community partners. Funding for this project has been secured through a mix of grants, donations, and fundraising efforts, with significant contributions from the MDOT/SHA Recreational Trails Program. Additional financial support has been provided by key partners, including Kennedy Krieger, REI, the Veterans Administration, the Community Foundation of Howard County, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, The Ward and Karen Wensch Foundation, and an IMBA/Shimano helping to bring this inclusive outdoor initiative to life.

“We are incredibly grateful for the community’s support,” added Chanelle Wimbish, Adaptive Athlete and Secretary of FPVSP. “This project highlights the power of collaboration and the shared vision of creating a more inclusive outdoor environment for all.”

All trails at PVSP go through a comprehensive review through the Maryland Park Service and the Department of Natural Resources (no trails may be built in the park without a rigorous review process) This trail was designed to the KASA trail standard, you can learn more about that here.
