Trail Captains

Our Trail Captain Program, in collaboration with park management, assigns captains to specific areas of the park. These captains organize work events, perform maintenance, and serve as the eyes and ears of our trail system. When you see volunteers clearing fallen trees, rest assured they have completed chainsaw certification, and first aid training, coordinate each workday with park management, and follow strict safety protocols to keep the trails safe and accessible for everyone.

Support the Trail Captain Program with a membership to the Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park!

Please remember that building trails, adding or removing signage, or operating machinery in the park is strictly prohibited.

We appreciate your passion! If you have questions, or comments, or want to get involved, contact us at – trails@fpvsp.org

Each Trail Captain receives training from the Maryland Park Service, and most are certified to operate chainsaws within the park.

Captains report issues to Friends, and we handle coordination and permissions with park management. Our Trail Captains work in teams, align their efforts with park staff, and report back to Friends to ensure seamless communication and effective maintenance.

Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park tracks our volunteer hours to match grant funding and demonstrate to the park community and supporters the strength of our engaged volunteer network.

TAKE ACTION: Join the PVSP trail community and support the Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park’s efforts to steward our trails!

We have partnerships with businesses, granting organizations and partner non profits that support the Trail Captains Program.
